Statement of Interest
Formal learning occurs
in schools, but another more dynamic type of learning takes
place in the greatest of all classrooms, the outdoors.
Because I began my career as a practicing landscape
architect, I am interested in reconstructing the
impoverished asphalt playgrounds of schools&emdash;inner
city, suburban, and rural&emdash;as richer, more engaging,
and rewarding natural environments. CEEDS provides a venue
for undertaking this challenge, which is distinctly
interdisciplinary, through team-taught studios and
demonstration projects. CEEDS also provides access to the
research expertise needed to evaluate the outcomes of
teaching and service in the department I chair.
